La Leche League is an international organisation which aims to promote
breastfeeding by providing up-to-date information and mother-to-mother
support.
It was founded in Chicago in 1956 by seven mothers who had
breastfed. “La leche” means milk in Spanish and the name La Leche League was
inspired by a shrine in St. Augustine, Florida, dedicated to the Mother
of Christ under the title “Nuestra Senora de la Leche y Buen Parto” or
“our Lady of Happy Delivery and Plentiful Milk”.
La Leche League offers telephone counselling and mother-to-mother
support groups. La Leche League Leaders are mothers who have breastfed
and who have undergone a program of training by La Leche League. La
Leche League. La Leche League International has a Health Advisory
Council comprised of doctors and health professionals from around the
world. This council is consulted about medical situations and

Breastfeeding Information maintains an extensive database along with a
collection of more than 37,000 articles from professional journals. La
Leche League publishes many books, including the breastfeeding manual

In case we forget to tell you …
Whatever your mother tongue, family situation, or age, and whether you
are pregnant, nursing, or merely curious, all women and nursing
children are welcome at our meetings!
La Leche League is a mother-to-mother support group offering
information about breastfeeding. Our leaders have gone through a
training process and are certified by La Leche League (LLL). We
also have a Professional Advisory Board ready to assist us if we need
them. LLL Leaders are available for telephone help. Do call
us if you need assistance.
Also available at our meetings is a free lending library covering a
wide variety of subjects including pregnancy, parenting and
nutrition. Please return the books at the next meeting or mail
them back to us. The League manual The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding may be purchased through us, just ask.
During the meetings we ask you to especially:
1. Keep a keen eye on your children. You are
responsible for your little one's safety as well as for the manner in
which s/he treats our meeting area.
2. Please avoid side conversations. We consider
what each person has to say as being very important and ask that you
refrain from side conversations so we can hear what others are saying.
3. Be very careful with hot drinks. Children burn much faster than adults!
Membership fees help us to reach more mothers who want to
breastfeed. A one-year membership to LLL International costs 40
US dollars and includes a member¬ship magazine New Beginnings.
Membership to LLL Deutschland includes a member¬ship letter, but does
not include New Beginnings and costs 27 Euros. Please speak to
one of the Leaders before or after the meeting if you wish to become a
member. Members of LLL International receive a 10 % discount when
ordering from the LLL Catalogue. Please con¬sider that membership
costs a great deal less than buying formula. Fees are not
mandat¬ory for your attendance at meetings. Our Leaders volunteer
their time and do not receive any salary. The money received
through fees or donations is used to buy books for the group library,
help defray the cost of photocopying, postage, and telephoning, and
sup¬ports the area and international organization.
If you would like further information about La Leche League, are
interested in becoming more involved in LLL or have unanswered
questions, please speak with one of the Leaders after the meeting.
