Munich American Peace Committee |
|
|
|
MAPC was formed in 1983, when it also joined the growing West German
peace movement's activities against the armaments escalation in Europe.
Several of the founders remain active in our group. The number of
persons supporting the Munich-American Peace Committee is increasing as
a result of the current foreign (and domestic!) developments, reflected
especially in militarism, unilateralism and the reduction of civil
liberties and democratic rights. We emphasize German and American
policies affecting our lives as German residents and American citizens.
Principal goals
1. Increasing availability of information, which the established
press largely ignores, concerning the diverse and differing opinions
existing in the U.S.
2. Drawing attention to:
- the supporters of the American peace movement,
- their counterparts in Germany,
- our collective and indiviual issues, solutions, activities, publications.
3. Distributing this information through such means as e-mail
contacts, media interviews, newspaper articles, public appearances, and
our monthly Radio Lora programs.
4. Encouraging and inspiring our compatriots to join us in active
participation in political life, influencing our governmental
representatives here and in the United States towards peaceful means of
settling differences and achieving productive cooperation.
Activities
Since our debut in 1983, we have continued to openly participate in the
yearly Easter Marches (Ostermärsche); blockades (Mutlangen);
demonstrations (including the monumental peace demonstrations in Bonn);
and vigils at the Munich Consulate against U.S. involvments in Panama,
Irak, Afghanistan etc. We participate with the Munich Coalition
of peace groups in the weekly vigil against war every Thursday
afternoon at Marienplatz.
Themes
Our emphasis has included such subjects as: U.S.-military intervention,
disarmament, conversion, asylum for foreigners, non-violent resistance,
and the plight of Native Americans. More recently the MAPC has focused
on the worldwide effects of globalization, especially as a result of
U.S. foreign policy.
Naturally, our activities increase during times of crisis. Thus we
presently deal intensively with topics relating to the terrorist
destruction of the World Trade Center and its aftermath; the conflict
between Israel and Palestine, and the intensification of U.S.
unilateralist policies.
Organization
MAPC meetings take place at least once a month, to exchange information
and ideas, and to plan activities. We often have speakers or a special
theme for discussion. We welcome new English-speaking participants!
