The Munich Wanderers are a part of the German Alpine Association or
DAV. Started as an independent organisation in the summer of 1999 by
two Brits who wanted to make the mountains more accessible
to English-speakers who didn't feel that their German would be
sufficient for them to join in the association's existing groups, the
Munich Wanderers are now a fully integrated part of the Munich
'Sektion' of the DAV.
We are active throughout the year, hiking, climbing and biking in the
summer, skiing and snow-shoeing in the winter. We presently have around
12 experienced hike leaders and organise trips on average every couple
of weeks or so. Each of the leaders has different interests and
different qualifications, giving us a broad palette of tours we can
offer, for example some of us have specialised in leading tours on
'Klettersteige' - fixed rope climbs or scrambles - whereas others of us
have concentrated on avalanche prevention and rescue training for
leading snow shoe tours. Because several of us have small kids, our
hikes range from the very easy (four hours around Spitzingsee on a
Saturday afternoon) to the ridiculous (the 3457 m Kreuzspitze in the
Ötztal region). Most of our tours are one-day affairs, but we do try to
organise a few weekend trips during the year using the advanced network
of mountain huts in the Bavarian and Austrian alps.
In order to take part in our activities it is necessary to join the DAV
Sektion München (annual membership costs € 38 per year for people up to
27 years old, € 68 for adults or € 90 for the whole family). After that
becoming a part of the Munich Wanderers is free, as are most of our
tours (the exception being where the tour is led by a qualified
mountain instructor).

All of our activities are listed in the internet at
www.munichwanderers.de, including our monthly social which presently
takes place on the first Thursday of the month in the Unionsbräu on
Einsteinstrasse near Max-Weber Platz. Registration for tours is done by
e-mail.
