International Travel Requirements for Pets |
|
|
|
When moving pets internationally, it's useful to know what to consider.
Here's a few guidelines.
Health Certificate
A bilingual health certificate and the international certification are
required. The certificate must be issued within 10 days of departure
and must be endorsed by the USDA in the pet’s state of origin. Pets
entering from the EC/EU – European States are not required to have
health certificates to move from one country to another on the
Continent.
Vaccinations
Dogs and cats must be current on all vaccinations, administered at lest
30 days prior to entry and not older that 180 days; but, within one
year is acceptable.
Rabies Certificate
An original rabies certificate should accompany the health certificate
and show proof that the vaccination was administered more than 30 days
prior to the flight and not more that 180 days. Note: A rabies
vaccination given one (1) year prior to entry is acceptable.
Import Permit
Required for all air cargo shipments, but not for ticketed passengers
arriving in Germany or transiting the major German airports cities. The
State Veterinarian orchestrates the issuing of the permit in each state
in Germany or the ministry or governmental agency. Three or more pets
will require import permits.
Quarantine Requirements
Not required for dogs or cats. There is a requirement for birds
depending upon species. Parrots require special permits, both from the
country of origin as well as the Federal State in Germany.
Airline Ticket & Reservation
Do not assume your pet is a piece of luggage to be checked in with your
baggage. Pets are treated just as any other normal passenger; they must
have a ticket and reservation for flight.
Special Comments
Consignees should be prepared to pay for inspection at destination.
Military personnel need to have PSC (permanent change of station)
orders available, and do not require an import permit as long as orders
accompany shipment. Corporate transferees and expatriates should have a
letter form their employer on company stationary clearly stating the
terms of employment, in particular, the terms of the contract from
starting date to completion date.
A copy of pet owner’s airline ticket to Germany. It may be a faxed copy
and only must show name, flight dates and to and from cities.
The above content is current as of November 19, 2003 and is subject to
change without prior notice. Always confirm prior to travel.
