Bansko is now Bulgaria’s premier ski resort due to the considerable
investment being made in the ski, golf and summer leisure facilities. A
combination of sensible planning controls and funding from
predominantly Bulgarian banks of approximately 35 million Euros has
resulted in a considerable increase in foreign tourism over the last
two years.
Bansko’s ski facilities no rival any western european resort. However,

Historical Bansko
The town of Bansko in its present location, is believed to date back to
around the 9th & 19th centuries. The town became a dominant centre
of the surrounding local villages and was known for its crafts, many of
which were sold throughout Europe. Bankso was also known as a cultural
and spiritual centre, all of which led the other villages look upon
Bankso residents with envy.
Bankso was the centre of a historical important arts school and many
talented painters & woodcarvers have created works of art in the
houses and churches of Bankso and local monasteries at Rila and Mount
Athos. Bansko was declared a unique town of international importance
for commercial tourism in 1979 by the Bulgarian government.
There are over 120 cultural and historic monuments in and around Bankso
including the world famous Rila monastery. Bansko also boasts one of

Bordering Bansko is the Pirin National Park which covers over 27,400
hectares from altidutes of 1.008 – 2,914 m . The rugged mountains
create a diverse and unique landscape of great aesthetic beauty.
Bansko – A Modern Holiday Resort
The new state of the art lift system in Bansko provides swift
convenient access onto the mountain with the main eight man Gondola by
Doppelmayer being only 18 months old. All lifts are accessed using the
chip card system drastically reducing queing times and ensuring your
security on the mountain.
Bansko offers its guests a unique 16 kilometer uninterrupted ski run,
starting from the Todorka Peak ( 2,600 m ) at the highest point of the
ski centre all the way down to the main Gondola lift at the outskirts
of the town. The excellent quality of snow on the 65 kilometer of
market ski runs is regularly maintained by 12 Kassbohrer snow grooming
machines and 40 Techno Alpin snow canons ensuring a great skiing
experience even in warmer conditions with snow guaranteed from December
until May. The last 7 km of the main slope is also lit for a unique
night skiing experience.
The Bansko ski school offers ski lessons for all ages and abilities in
both groups or individually. There is also tuition for cross-country
skiing, ski kindergarden for children aged 4-7 years with all graduates
receiving skiing certificates. Other ski facilities include a new
dedicated snow boarding area and a new 90m high by 16m wide half pipe

Summer Activities
Bansko is rapidly developing it’s summer tourist market and now offers
everything from fantastic walking and hiking in the Pirin National Park
to a full range of activities including mountain biking, horse riding,
fishing and sight seeing. However, the most dramatic development to
impact summer tourism is the on-going development of the full 18 hole

designed by Ian Woosnam, is set to attract a whole new market of
visitors to Bansko.
